What is a K in gold?

The karat (kt) is a unit of measurement used to indicate the purity of gold. Pure gold is 24 karats, which means that it is 100% gold with no other metals mixed in. However, pure gold is too soft to be used in jewellery, so it is often mixed with other metals to give it strength and durability.

The amount of gold in a piece of jewellery is indicated by the karat number. For example, a gold ring that is 18 karats contains 18 parts gold and 6 parts other metals, for a total of 24 parts. This means that the ring is 75% gold and 25% other metals.

The most common karat weights for gold jewellery are 9k, 14k, 18k, and 24k. 9k gold contains 37.5% gold and 62.5% other metals, 14k gold contains 58.5% gold and 41.5% other metals, 18k gold contains 75% gold and 25% other metals, and 24k gold is pure gold.

In general, higher karat gold is softer and more expensive than lower karat gold because it contains a higher percentage of pure gold. Lower karat gold is harder and more durable, but it also contains a higher percentage of other metals, which may affect the colour and appearance of the finished piece.

    9K gold vs 18K gold

9k gold and 18k gold are both types of gold jewellery, but they differ in the amount of pure gold they contain.

9k gold is a type of gold that contains 37.5% pure gold and 62.5% other metals, such as copper, silver, and zinc. It is a lower karat gold than 18k gold, which means that it is less expensive and harder, but also less pure.

18k gold is a type of gold that contains 75% pure gold and 25% other metals. It is a higher karat gold than 9k gold, which means that it is more expensive and softer, but also more pure.

One of the main differences between 9k and 18k gold is their appearance. 9k gold has a slightly yellowish hue due to the presence of other metals, while 18k gold has a brighter, more golden colour due to the higher percentage of pure gold.

Another difference is the price. Because it contains a higher percentage of pure gold, 18k gold is generally more expensive than 9k gold.

Finally, there are also some differences in the properties of the two metals. 18k gold is softer and more prone to scratching and wear and tear than 9k gold, which makes it less suitable for everyday wear. 9k gold is harder and more durable, which makes it a good choice for everyday wear.

Overall, the choice between 9k and 18k gold will depend on your personal preferences and budget, as well as the intended use for the jewellery

    Palladium vs platinum

Palladium and platinum are both precious metals that are often used in jewellery making. They are both known for their durability, rarity, and white colour, but there are some key differences between the two metals.

One of the main differences between palladium and platinum is their density. Palladium is lighter and less dense than platinum, which means that it is more pliable and easier to work with. This can make it a good choice for certain types of jewellery, such as rings with intricate designs.

Another difference between the two metals is their price. Palladium is generally less expensive than platinum, which makes it a more affordable option for those looking to purchase jewellery made of precious metals. However, platinum is more expensive because it is more rare and is perceived as being more valuable.

Finally, there are also some differences in the properties of the two metals. Platinum is more durable and resistant to wear and tear than palladium, which means that it may be a better choice for everyday wear. Palladium is also more prone to scratching, which means that it may require more maintenance to keep it looking its best.

Overall, both palladium and platinum are excellent choices for you jewellery or wedding ring. The best choice for you will depend on your personal preferences, budget, and intended use for the jewellery.

Tips for choosing a wedding ring

    1. Set a budget: Before you start shopping for a wedding ring, it's important to set a budget so you know how much you can afford to spend. This will help narrow down your options and make the shopping process a little easier.
    2. Consider your personal style: Your wedding ring should reflect your personal style and taste, so think about the kinds of jewelry you typically wear and what you feel most comfortable in. Do you prefer a more traditional look, or are you drawn to more modern and unique styles?
    3. Think about the type of metal you prefer: There are many different types of metals to choose from when it comes to wedding rings, including gold, platinum, palladium and silver. Consider which metal you prefer and what will best suit your lifestyle. For example, if you work with your hands, you may want to choose a harder metal like platinum that can withstand wear and tear better.
    4. Consider the diamond (or other gemstone) shape: If you choose a ring with a diamond or other gemstone, you'll have to decide on the shape of the stone. Popular shapes include round, princess, oval, and pear. Think about what shape you prefer and what will look best on your finger.
    5. Think about the band width: The width of the band can also affect the overall look of the ring. If you have a larger hand, a wider band may be more appropriate, while a smaller hand may look better with a thinner band.
    6. Try on different styles: It's important to try on different styles and see what looks and feels best on your finger. Don't be afraid to try on something a little outside your comfort zone – you may be surprised at what you like!

By following these tips, you should be able to find a wedding ring that is perfect for you and your partner. Remember, the most important thing is that the ring represents your love and commitment to each other.

What is a fitted wedding band?

A fitted wedding band is a type of wedding ring that is designed to fit snugly against the engagement ring, creating a seamless and cohesive look. Fitted wedding bands are often used in conjunction with engagement rings that have unique or intricate designs, as the fitted band helps to highlight the design of the engagement ring.

Fitted wedding bands are typically custom-made to fit the specific shape and size of the engagement ring. This ensures that the band fits perfectly against the engagement ring and doesn't shift or move around on the finger.

Fitted wedding bands can be made of a variety of materials, including gold, platinum, and palladium. They can also be adorned with diamonds or other precious gemstones, depending on the preference of the wearer.

Overall, fitted wedding bands are a stylish and practical choice for couples who want a cohesive and seamless look to their wedding ring set.

    Natural diamonds vs lab-grown diamonds

Natural diamonds are diamonds that are formed naturally over millions of years deep within the earth. They are formed through a process of extreme heat and pressure, and are brought to the surface through volcanic eruptions or through deep mines.

Lab-grown diamonds, on the other hand, are diamonds that are created in a laboratory setting. There are two main methods for creating lab-grown diamonds: high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD). In both cases, the process involves recreating the conditions under which diamonds form naturally, but in a controlled laboratory setting.

One of the main differences between natural diamonds and lab-grown diamonds is the way in which they are formed. Natural diamonds are formed over millions of years deep within the earth, while lab-grown diamonds are created in a matter of weeks or months in a laboratory.

Another difference is that natural diamonds are typically more expensive than lab-grown diamonds because they are rarer and more difficult to extract from the earth. Lab-grown diamonds are generally less expensive because they can be produced in a controlled laboratory setting, which reduces the cost of production.

Finally, there are also some differences in the properties of natural and lab-grown diamonds. Natural diamonds may have slight imperfections, known as inclusions, which are caused by the formation process. Lab-grown diamonds may be more uniform in appearance because they are created in a controlled environment. However, both types of diamonds can be cut, polished, and graded in a similar manner.

Tips for choosing jewellery as a gift

It's difficult to say which specific jewellery item is the best to gift, as it really depends on the recipient's personal style and preferences. Some people might love a bold and statement-making piece, while others might prefer something more delicate and understated. Here are a few factors to consider when choosing a jewellery gift:

    1. The recipient's style: As mentioned, the recipient's personal style should be a major consideration when choosing a jewellery gift. If you're not sure what their style is, you could try looking at the jewellery they already own or asking for input from friends or family members.
    2. The occasion: The occasion for the gift will also influence the type of jewellery you choose. For example, a pair of diamond stud earrings might be a more appropriate gift for a wedding anniversary than a pair of brightly coloured earrings.
    3. Your relationship with the recipient: Your relationship with the recipient will also affect the type of jewellery you choose. For example, a more sentimental piece might be appropriate for a close family member, while a more trendy or fun piece might be a better fit for a friend.

Ultimately, the best jewellery gift is one that is thoughtful and considered. Whether you choose a classic piece or something more unique and personal, the most important thing is that the gift comes from the heart. If in doubt, you can purchase our gift card here.
